There are over 1.39 billion monthly active users of Facebook. With over 890 million people logging on each day, can your business really afford not to have a presence on the most popular social media network of all time?
Setting up a business page takes between 15 and 30 minutes and is as easy as pie. In this infographic we’ll take you through the process step-by-step to ensure that the setup goes as smoothly as possible. We’ve even included a couple of handy hints along the way that’ll give your page, and your business, a little boost.
When Facebook was first launched by 19-year-old Mark Zuckerberg in 2004, it was originally called “thefacebook.com” and membership was reserved solely for Harvard University students. It was gradually then expanded to other universities in the Boston area, then then Ivy League, then most universities in Canada and the United States, corporations and by September 2006, to everyone over the age of 13 with an email address.
Since then it’s safe to say that Facebook has well and truly cemented itself in everyday life. As we mentioned before, there are 1.39 billion monthly active users (MAU); a figure which is growing substantially each and every year! That’s a lot of people for you to be able to reach out to! Whilst not all of these people will end up being your customer or use your services, by merely being on Facebook you’re dramatically increasing your chances of being exposed to potential new customers.

From start to finish, setting up your business page shouldn’t take you more than 15 minutes to half an hour. If it takes you less or more time – there’s no need to panic! Follow the steps below and you won’t miss a thing!
Step One: To set up a business page, you need to have a personal account to associate it with. If you already have a personal account, login and you’ll be able to create a page from there. If not, it’s time to set one up!
Once you’ve logged in, click on the arrow in the top right hand corner of Facebook and select “Create Page” from the drop down:
Step Two: Let’s get started! The first thing you need to do is choose a business category for your Page. You’ll be presented with these options:
Step Three: Now you’ll need to select the category that best describes your business.
Step Four: It’s time to optimise! This is your chance to really sell your business and make the most out of your page.
Company description: A 155 character summary of what your company does. This is where you explain who you are and what you do. Be compelling but not mysterious – remember, not everyone that visits your page will have come in to contact with you before so now’s not the time for jargon or buzzwords.
Website: Enter your company’s web address, if you have one.
Unique Facebook Web Address: Don’t try and be fancy here, stick to your business name! For example, we opted for SwitchMyBusiness – which looks like this: https://www.facebook.com/switchmybusiness
After filling these details in you’ll then be asked if your company is a real organisation – hopefully this is a yes! Then you’ll be asked if your company is a real organisation – again, this should be a yes!
Click “Save Info” and move on to the next stage.
Step Five: It’s time to start making your page pretty. Upload a profile picture that’s 180px x 180px. Many companies choose to use their logo as it works when viewed large or thumbnail size.

Step Six: Add your Page to your favourites so you can access it easily. You’ll also be able to quickly access your new page by clicking the same down arrow where you first created your Page. Simple!
Step Seven: Reach out. Want to run some advertising to give your page a kick start? Now’s the time to do it. Or start by inviting your employees to follow the page.
Click “Save Info” and your page is ready to go! Now it’s time to start posting.
Tips for Creating Engaging Page Posts
The wonderful thing about Facebook is that you can schedule posts to go out whenever you want! So you don’t need to log in each day to write something. Instead, you can schedule standard posts (perhaps promoting some of your content, or calling attention to seasonal pages such as Mother’s Day, Valentine’s or Christmas ranges).
It’s worth spending a little bit of time putting together a bit of a social media schedule for your page, and letting a couple of people in the business in on the schedule so that if you’re out of the office, other people can manage it.
Coming up with a schedule will keep your feed nice and full, which lets people know that you’re active and paying attention. It also means that you can plan ahead from any promotions you may be running and keep your social media followers ahead of the curve – nothing makes people loyal to your social media accounts like a good pre-release sale, discount code or exclusive deals.
