Gas and electricity prices fluctuate on a daily, and sometimes even hourly, basis. It’s a volatile market where oil prices are influenced by everything from global conflict to natural disasters. In addition to this, the size of your business could also be affecting the price you pay per kilowatt-hour.
Whilst many of us never really think about where our gas and electricity comes from, the truth is that it has to travel a long way before it reaches your home or business. It’s brought wholesale from suppliers across the globe, and when there’s a war or natural disaster in a country that produces gas or oil, this reduces production and accessibility, pushing prices up worldwide.
This interactive graph tracks the average cost of gas and electricity for small and large businesses and marks some of the world events which are responsible for the fluctuation of oil prices. This serves two purposes; to highlight the disparity between the price paid by large corporations and small businesses and well as showcasing how global events affect the bills you pay.
We’ve combined data from the Department of Energy and Climate Change with news stories from the past decade to help illustrate the effect that global conflict, natural disasters and politics can have on fuel prices. As new data is published each quarter, we’ll be updating our graph so you can see how the prices continue to rise and fall.
