Who are the top business energy suppliers?

This page was updated 19th September 2016

The business and domestic energy markets are two very different things, and the people who supply your home energy may not be best placed to supply your business.

Whilst the ‘Big Six’ dominate both business and home energy markets, there are a number of business only competitors who provide customers an alternative to the most well known energy companies.

Who are The Big Six?

The following companies are commonly known as the ‘Big Six’:

  • British Gas
  • EDF Energy
  • E.ON
  • SSE
  • Scottish Power
  • N Power

These businesses supply over 90% of household gas and electricity. However, their market share has decreased in recent years. Whilst there have been alternative business suppliers for some time, we have recently seen a number of challengers appear in the market, including Ovo Energy, Extra Energy and Ecotricity.  There are also companies such as Dual Energy who specialise in commercial energy contracts or Ecotricity who specialise in renewable energy. Soaring prices and negative headlines are leading many customers to consider smaller providers. Below we look at just a few alternatives to the big names in energy:

Ovo Energy

Bristol based Ovo Energy have been going since 2009 and were awarded 1st place in the 2015 Which? energy satisfaction survey. Their standard energy mix contains 33% reneweable enregy, or you can pay £5 extra a month for 100% renewables. Ovo aim to make managing your energy simple, and provides customers with a mobile app and smart meters.

Dual Energy

Dual Energy are a business energy specialist who aim to provide a low cost alternative to the Big Six. Every Dual Energy customer gets a free smart meter, which allows them half-hourly readings of their energy usage. According to the latest figures, 19.1% of Dual Energy’s fuel comes from renewable sources.

Dong Energy

Danish company Dong Energy is one of the largest developers of offshore wind in the UK. They also produce oil and gas and supply energy to industrial and commercial markets. In the last decade, the company has expanded rapidly, growing from under 10 employees in 2004 to almost 700 now.

Ecotricity

Ecotricity is the UK’s leading green energy supplier. The company has a unique business model in which they invest profits into developing more sources of green energy. Ecotricity pride themselves on spending more per customer on green energy than any other energy company in Britain.
