A smart meter measures your business gas and electricity usage electronically, and sends the information to your energy supplier without the need for any manual meter readings. Readings from your business smart meter can be automatically taken as frequently as half-hourly which increases the accuracy of your bills and business energy quotes.
Smart meters can be installed on any property with an electricity and gas supply, either business or household.
If your meter sends business energy readings to your supplier automatically, then you have a smart reader. If your meter does not do this, then your energy meter is not a smart meter.
Under the national smart meter roll out, energy suppliers are offering customers smart meters to be installed by 2020. To see if you are able to have a smart meter installed for your business, contact your supplier.
By 2020, your business energy supplier should have contacted you about having a smart meter fitted in your premises. If you have not yet been contacted about having a smart meter installed for your business, you can contact your supplier directly and check if they are available yet.
While exact savings will be differ from customer to customer, a report from Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy has indicated that the cost-benefit of installing smart meters will reach £5.7 billion across domestic and non-domestic properties. With energy efficiency and bill accuracy increasing with smart meter installations, then fitting one should save your business on its energy costs.

These were all confirmed by emails which allowed me to compare with our current supplier in a clear way.
