DONG Energy has cemented its commitment to UK offshore wind energy by taking full control of a development zone with potential to power 3 million UK households.
The Hornsea Zone, located 31-190km off the Yorkshire coast and covering more than 4,000sq km, is one of the world’s biggest offshore wind development zones, covering an area more than twice the size of Greater London.
DONG Energy on 21 August acquired project rights for Hornsea Projects Two and Three, which have a combined potential for development of around 3GW of capacity. These projects are expected to form an important part of the DONG’s post-2020 pipeline.
The current deal is in addition to its control of the 1,200 megawatt (MW) Hornsea Project One, acquired in February 2015 DONG Energy.
Brent Cheshire, DONG Energy’s UK Country Chairman, said the deal would offer “new and exciting development opportunities, not least because of the sheer size of the projects in terms of acreage and their high generation potential.”
He added that DONG Energy has already invested around £6 billion in the UK, most of it in offshore wind farm development. “We expect to invest a similar amount by 2020.”
Cheshire said stressed DONG’s “strong commitment to helping the UK deliver low carbon energy supplies while creating jobs and building a robust local supply chain.”
Huub den Rooijen, Head of Offshore Wind at The Crown Estate, which manages the UK seabed, welcomed DONG’s involvement in developing the Hornsea Zone, especially given their proven track record in delivering offshore wind projects. “We look forward to working with DONG Energy as they … unlock the significant potential of this area of seabed for low carbon energy.”
One of the main cited reasons for DONG’s involvement is delivering cheap electricity for business. By scaling up wind power, the cost of generated electricity will fall, offering an economic but still sustainable source of electricity for environmentally conscious small to medium sized businesses.
DONG Energy is one of the many commercial electricity suppliers SwitchMyBusiness.com deals direct with. To find out more about the wind power or renewable energy deals DONG or other suppliers are offering, give us a call (or request a call back using our form).
