Moving Premises and Business Energy

We know that moving into new businesses premises can be stressful and important tasks, such as organising your business energy, may get forgotten about. This can lead to expensive mistakes and unexpected bills. To help you avoid these, here’s a business energy checklist for moving premises.

Have you told your current energy supplier that you’re moving?

You need to make sure you let your business energy supplier know the date you intend to leave the current property. This helps to ensure you are not charged for anybody else’s energy usage once they move into the property.

Does your new supplier know when you are moving in?

By giving your moving-in date to the energy supplier at your new premises, you can ensure that energy will be supplied to the property when you move in and your new supplier knows when to start billing you.

Will you be staying with the same supplier?

We recommend that you take a look at new business energy quotes for the property your business is moving into. As business energy prices vary across different locations, it’s always worth checking to see if you can get a cheaper energy tariff with a new supplier.

You can get instant business energy quotes from SwitchMyBusiness today. Simply give us a few details and we’ll find the best energy rates for your business in seconds.

What is the current supply status in the new premises?

When moving into new business premises, the supply status will be in any of 3 situations:

1. The supply is disconnected

The previous tenant of the property may have cancelled their contract, and the energy supply to the site will have been disconnected.

In this case, you may have to pay for a reconnection to the premises. We advise you have a look at energy quotes at this stage to minimise the amount you may have to spend on your energy costs.

2. The supply is connected

In this case, an energy supply is currently running to the property. This is the easiest situation to find yourself in as you won’t have to organise a reconnection.

However, it’s definitely worth comparing business energy tariffs at this point as the previous occupants may not have signed up to the cheapest deal.

3. The property is newly built and a connection has not been set up/

In this case, you are likely to be dealing with a similar situation to if the supply was disconnected and you will most likely need to organise for a new meter to be installed.

We’d always recommend for you to start this process as early as possible so you can avoid any delays and have an active supply from day one.

Have you taken a final meter reading?

Be sure to take a final energy meter reading as you leave the premises to avoid being charged for any energy that you haven’t used. Giving this reading to your current supplier allows them to give you an accurate final bill, preventing you from being charged for another business’s usage.

Also, make sure to take a meter reading when you move into the new premises. This will help your new energy supplier to calculate an accurate bill for your energy usage during your first month.

If you’re unsure about how to read your energy meter, read our guide here.

Does your supplier know your business’s new address?

Be sure to give your new business address to your current energy supplier so that your final bill can be sent to you. If you’re staying with the same supplier, giving them your new address as early as possible will allow them to make arrangements to ensure your move goes as smoothly as possible.

So helpful

"So helpful, especially as I found the contract renewal on my new half hourly meter quite baffling (KVA charges, MOP contracts and other "extras" all had me scratching my head). Arron took great care to explain everything clearly and told me everything I needed to know in order to be able to compare prices from all avenues on a level field. He didn't pester me endlessly for a decision did exactly as I asked in terms of call backs and quotations. Such a refreshing change to deal with someone who listens. Arron has helped me renew my contract next month through switchmybusiness in a very straightforward and painless way on an excellent rate. Fabulous service, thank you Arron."

A lovely lady called Bhavni phoned me …

"A lovely lady called Bhavni phoned me very quickly after I went online. She couldn't have been more helpful, explaining all the different rates for me. She managed to save me a huge amount per year - gave me her direct phone number if I needed to phone again - like gold-dust! even gave me a termination letter to send to my supplier. Couldn't have been easier and will definitely use again - and hope I get to speak to Bhavni again. Thanks again"
