With new research showing that two thirds of employees will use company time to shop for Christmas and Black Friday bargains, how can you keep your workforce on-point throughout the Christmas season?
Christmas is the perfect time to give something back to staff, and incentives are a great way to increase performance. Let the highest sellers go home a couple of hours early on a Friday, or bring in some festive mulled wine to celebrate weekly results. You could even introduce flexible working on a limited basis, allowing your employees ample time to stock up on presents!
If Christmas is a quiet time for your business, you’re likely to miss your usual monthly targets. However, if you abandon targets entirely, you may find staff motivation drops. Set specific Christmas targets – perhaps they’re lower than your usual goals, or perhaps you target different metrics. Either way, make sure that you give employees something to work towards.
If you need staff to work over the entire Christmas period, you may see office politics rise to fever pitch as people vie for coveted days off. Set expectations early in the year with regards to how much time off people are allowed, and encourage your employees to book as early as possible. You may also see an increase in people asking for last minute holiday days – make sure that your policy on this is clear and well understood.
Christmas is the perfect time to let your staff know that you appreciate them – and saying thank you doesn’t have to cost you thousands in bonuses! Research has shown that employees who feel appreciated work harder and are more productive. Get some nibbles in for an impromptu afternoon gathering, send everybody personalised cards or even give out awards.
Whilst Christmas shouldn’t be an excuse for office bedlam, don’t become a Scrooge! Yes work needs to be done, but employees are likely to have more demands on their time and attention during the Christmas period, and the most successful companies are those that make their workforce’s lives easier.

"Aaron Gallagher recently helped me switch the gas and electricity supply for our business. He was extremely helpful and well informed which was great for me as I know nothing in this area! He saved us a small fortune and dealt with all of the switch for us which again was extremely helpful as it wasn't completely straightforward. Thanks again for you help Aaron, it was so appreciated."This review was posted by Rachel on the 17th of February 2018
