As winter approaches it’s good to ensure that your boiler and radiators are in full working order. If you notice that your radiators are not hot at the top then they may need bleeding.
Our friends at British Gas have made a video explaining how to bleed your radiator – how to do it and what equipment you will need. It also explains how to tell if your radiator is full of sludge.
Bleeding a radiator is relatively simple. If the top of the radiator is cold or just warm when you know it should be hot then it usually means there is air in the system. In order to bleed the radiator you will need a radiator key but before you do anything ensure the system is turned off.
You will also need a piece of cloth so that the water coming out of the radiator (there may be a little bit) doesn’t make a mess on your carpet! Remember to check the pressure on your boiler if you have let air out of the radiators. You may need to add more water if you have a combi or condensing boiler. If you are unsure how to do this then contact a plumber.
If you think your radiators have sludge in them then you will need to call for an expert unfortunately this isn’t something you can deal with yourself.
The British Gas engineer in the video will talk you through the process of removing air from your radiator. It only takes a few minutes to do but will mean your radiators are working to their full potential.
